Codeine is used, usually in combination with other medications, to reduce coughing. It also is used to relieve mild to moderate pain.

Side effects

Although side effects from codeine are not common, they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

  • dizziness
  • lightheadedness
  • drowsiness
  • upset stomach
  • vomiting
  • constipation
  • stomach pain
  • rash
  • difficulty urinating

If you experience either of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:

  • difficulty breathing
  • mood changes

Keep all appointments with your doctor.

Do not let anyone else take your medicines.
